Ben Hodges:
NATO and the German Forces: facing a new world order

Lieutenant General Ben Hodges (USA, ret), is the former Commanding General, U.S. Army Europe 2014-2017. On retiring, he was named to the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies at the Center for European Policy Analysis(CEPA), is a Board Member of “Spirit of America”, and is a Partner with Berlin Global Advisors.

A native of Quincy, Florida, Ben Hodges graduated from the United States Military Academy in May 1980 and was commissioned in the Infantry. After his first assignment as an Infantry Lieutenant in Garlstedt, Germany, he commanded Infantry units at the Company, Battalion and Brigade levels in the 101st Airborne Division and in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (2003-2004). His other operational assignments include also served in operational assignments as Director of Operations for Multi-National Corps-Iraq in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (2005-2006) and as Director of Operations, Regional Command South, in Kandahar, Afghanistan (2009-2010).

General Hodges has also served in a variety of Joint and Army Staff positions to include Tactics Instructor at the Infantry School; Chief of Plans, 2nd Infantry Division in KOREA; Aide-de-Camp to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Army Congressional Liaison Officer; Task Force Senior Observer-Controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, LA; Chief of Staff, XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg NC; Director of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Coordination Cell on the Joint Staff, Chief of Legislative Liaison for the United States Army, and Commander, NATO Allied Land Command in Izmir TURKEY.

General Hodges’ last military assignment was as Commanding General, United States Army Europe (USAREUR) from November 2014 to December 2017.

General Hodges retired in that position in December 2017 with NATO Supreme Allied Commander, General Curtis Scaparrotti presiding over the ceremony and highlighting LTG Hodges' commitment and contribution: “As the USAREUR commanding general, Ben has led our land forces during one of the most consequential periods in recent European history, He assumed command just as the United States and NATO were confronted with fundamental changes in Europe's security environment and in response Ben's leadership has led to the implementation of the United States' reassurance initiative.”
